"The officers attempted to unsuccessfully grab the pillion passenger from the bike, who dropped a big suitcase as the plateless bike sped off," the statement read in part.

As the officers opened the unusually heavy bag, they made a discovery that linked the rider and passenger to an ongoing investigation.

"Two G-3 riffles, 175 rounds of 7.62mm calibre, 9 7.62mm blanks, one spent 7.62mm cartridge and one pair of handcuffs were recovered.

"Further inspection of the firearms established that the two G-3 rifles were among four stolen during an attack staged at Kipasi police post in Mbita," the DCI wrote.

The rounds of ammunition were 85 more than the 110 stolen in the ambush at the police post.

A multi-agency team has been deployed to track down the two suspects. In addition, cops have also launched a probe to establish where the spent cartridge was used.

The raid staged on November 16 saw a gang of thieves storm the armoury section of the police station, making away with four rifles;  three G-3s and one AK-47.

On November 30, a man believed to have masterminded the attack was nabbed and a G-3 rifle was recovered following a tip-off from the public.

The DCI called for anyone with information that will aid in apprehending the suspects to come forward.
