Uhuru's Appointee Resigns After 7 Months in Office

Captain Gilbert Kibe resigned as the Chairperson of the Board of the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA).

In a letter addressed to President William Ruto on Friday, December 2, 2022, Kibe cited personal issues as the sole reason for his resignation. 

“I hereby tender my resignation as Chairman of the Board of the Communications Authority of Kenya with effect from December 1, 2022, due to personal interests,” Kibe detailed.

The resignation letter was also copied to the Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Information, Communications and Digital Economy, Eliud Owalo.

Capt. Kibe thanked the head of state, President William Ruto, for the opportunity accorded to him to serve in the national regulatory agency for the few months.

The outgoing Board chairperson was appointed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta on May 13, 2022, to serve for a period of three years.

Before his appointment to the authority, the captain worked as the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority Director-General, a position he served from April 2015.

Kibe also held a Chief Executive Officer(CEO) position at Bahati Ridge Development Limited and Nairobi Flight Training Limited. He was also a chairman of Home Afrika International.

The outgoing head took over the prime position from seasoned Murang'a politician Kembi Gitura who tendered his resignation to venture back into politics ahead of the August 9, 2022, polls.

CA is responsible for facilitating the development of the information and communications sectors, including; broadcasting, cybersecurity, multimedia, telecommunications, electronic commerce, postal and courier services.

In its actions, the authority should be independent and free of control by government, political or commercial interests.

The resignation coincides with the appointment of the new Principal Secretary (PS) for ICT and Digital Economy, John Kipchumba Tanui.
