Kenyans affirmed their position in the world as pacesetters in various sectors, from innovation to philanthropy, literature, and public service, children of the soil flew the country's flag high on international land.

Kenyans.co.ke compiled a list of some of the notable men, women and children recognised globally in 2022:

Norah Magero

Kenyan engineer Norah Magero was feted for inventing a solar-powered cooler to store vaccines under the recommended low temperatures.

Magero's VacciBox bagged the Royal Academy of  Engineering Africa Prize on June 19. Judge Alessandra Buonfino stated that it had the potential to disrupt the medical industry.

The engineer received funding of Ksh3.6 million (GBP25,000) to boost her production to circulate the boxes across the country.

Aaron Nanok.

Turkana County Assembly staff member and agronomist, Aaron Nanok, was named the 2022 United Nations Person of the Year.

Nanok received his trophy at the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) headquarters on October 24, for his strides towards achieving sustainable agriculture.

The UN stated that his methods would go a long way in solving the food crises in the country amid the worst drought that has hit the country.

"We can only be food and nutrition secure if we make our agri-food systems resilient and include food not only as a human right, a common and public good," he remarked while receiving the reward.

Robin Ndungu, Esther Kimani and Maryanna Gichanga

Three Kenyans' efforts towards climate change were recognised during the  2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP27.

Robin Ndungu, Esther Kimani and Maryanna Gichanga were feted alongside 20 others by the African Development Bank under the Youth Adapt Awards.

Ndungu is the brainchild behind artificial intelligence helping fish farmers conduct business, while Kimani created eco-friendly fertilizers.

Gichanga developed a system to help farmers prepare for and keep tabs on the planting season. 

The three received Ksh12.2 million each (USD100,000) and a 12-month training to help grow their business.

Anne Qabale Duba, the founder of the Qabale Duba Foundation, won the World's Best Nurse award in 2022.

Duba was feted on Thursday, May 12, during the inaugural Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award for fighting for equality and advocating against harmful cultural practices in society.

The Kenyan nurse was presented with a Ksh29 million cheque, which she selflessly used to set up a school in her home village. She expressed gratitude for the award.

“I could not have imagined in my wildest dreams that I would be acknowledged and celebrated in such a way. This is a win for Kenya, for Africa and the girls in the villages,” Duba celebrated. stated.

Brian Ndung'u, Dulla Shiltone, Kyelie Muthoni, Lennox Omondi were declared the 2022 winners of the Hult Prize.

The four students from St Paul's University pocketed Ksh120 million (USD1 million) for innovating biodegradable sanitary towels from banana fibre.

During the award ceremony held in America, the four were awarded for reducing period poverty and reducing reliance on plastic in manufacturing the towels.
