The government has announced plans to destroy 210 vehicles imported into the country by Kenyans after failing to meet the set quality standards.
In a statement released on Tuesday, January 3, the government announced that the imported vehicles would be disposed of on Wednesday, January 4.
Affected owners were initially given a 30-day notice on December 2, 2022, to claim the vehicles before the specified time period lapsed.
"Pursuant to the provisions of sections 42 and 248 of the East African Community Customs Management Act. 2004, notice is given that the under-mentioned condemned goods shall be disposed of by way of destruction on January 4, 2023, after the expiry of thirty (30) days from the publication of this notice," read part of the statement.
Destruction of the goods will pave the way for other goods to be docked at the port.
Some of the cars listed for destruction included Mercedes Benz, Toyota Prado, Chevrolet, Range Rover, BMW, Jeep, Chrysler Cherokee and Toyota Land Cruiser.
Others include Toyota Probox, Toyota Vitz, Subaru Impreza, Mazda Demio, and Toyota Harrier.
The Customs Department also included other Toyota models, Nissan and Mitsubishi, in the list of imported cars lined up for destruction.
The government revealed the consignments' arrival date at the port, the consignee, the description of the goods, the Bill of the lading tracking number and the manifest numbers of the goods.
Destruction of the vehicles by the Customs and Border Control Department also aids in conducting proper audits before releasing its financial reports.
An initial notice had warned the owners to make the necessary changes needed to meet the requisite standards. This would allow the owners to collect the vehicles.
