Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja was criticized for putting up billboards in the capital, welcoming back Kenyans who traveled upcountry for festivities.

In the billboards seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Sakaja was pictured with his deputy James Njoroge Muchiri

“Welcome back to Nairobi, we wish you a prosperous year 2023,” the message was plastered alongside the duo’s portraits.

A section of Kenyans felt that the billboards were a misplaced priority and that more pressing challenges needed to be addressed.

“You should not use money in putting up billboards that are not meant to bring any tangible benefit."

“The money used in the project could have been used to clean the capital or give bursary to needy students,” a social media user advised.

His sentiments were echoed by a tweep named Patience Wanjiru.

“The money could have been used to sort the issue of sewage which is a huge problem here in Nairobi,” Wanjiru lamented.

Another social media user called on Sakaja for exercising double standards on the issue of billboards.

“The governor had announced that his campaign billboards will be recycled to make bags only to put up more welcoming Kenyans back to the city,” he quipped.

However, Sakaja was supported by some sections of Kenyans who did not see any issue with the welcome-back message.

Haron Ogweno, in a tweet, remarked, “Most Kenyans have a welcome back mat on their doors but are castigating the governor.”
