Kenya Railways Corporation revealed plans to link the Miritini Standard Guage Railway (SGR) Station to Mombasa Old Town station.

In response to queries by travellers on January 5, KRC indicated that plans were underway to have train services to Mombasa Old Town following complaints by a number of Kenyans

The agency indicated that the move would involve the rehabilitation of the Meter Guage Railway.

"Plans are underway even as rehabilitation is ongoing to connect SGR Miritini station with Mombasa town," read the statement in part.

However, speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, officials noted that no clear timelines had been set out for the particular project.

The officials indicated that an official communication would be made in due course.

Kenya Railway's response came after a number of travellers lamented that the SGR terminates at the Miritini station forcing them to seek alternative means of transport to the old town.

"Mombasa my holiday city cannot be any more relaxing and enjoyable without arriving and leaving with SGR.

"Kindly connect SGR Miritini Terminus with the Old Mombasa Railway Station for a seamless train journey to Mombasa just like in Nairobi," Martin Kigotho stated.

Earlier in December 2022, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen revealed that plans were also underway to extend the SGR to major towns as was initially planned.

At an event on December 8, 2022, the CS noted that the SGR project has ended in Suswa despite initial plans to have it cross over to Uganda.

Among the towns he stated would benefit from the extension were Nakuru, Eldoret and Kisumu.

"We must ensure that it connects to a busy town so people can travel with SGR to Nakuru. Later, we will connect it to Eldoret, Kisumu before it goes to Uganda.

"In the next few months, we should start connecting it to Nakuru," the CS intimated.
