The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) on Saturday, January 7, cautioned teachers against a new scheme swindling tutors countrywide.

In a statement, the institution disclosed that conmen were peddling false information regarding an upcoming training organised by the institution.

The swindlers, as a result, demanded a payment of Ksh1,000 from all tutors intending to attend the said training.

In exchange, the conmen promised to furnish the teachers with a T-shirt and badge which will allow them to access the training venue.

"The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) wishes to inform teachers and the general public that there is false information being peddled by conmen, deceiving unsuspecting people of training at the Institute on various dates, notably 6th January 2023.

"The unscrupulous persons are mostly targeting teachers and directing them to register with Ksh1,000 for the purchase of a T-shirt and a badge as they attend the training. The act constitutes fraud punishable by law," read the statement in part.

KICD, therefore, cautioned teachers and the general public from falling for the conmen noting that it has not advertised any training that requires participants to pay a fee.

"KICD has not organised any such training of teachers, neither has it requested teachers to register with money for such an activity.

"The public is, therefore, requested to be extra vigilant and report such cases to the nearest police station," added the statement

KICD is known for communicating in advance via its official website and social media channels before rolling out the teacher-training calendar.

The scam came two months after St Teresa Girls Yala cautioned parents against sending money to fraudsters who started calling them after illegally obtaining school fees records.

In the November 2022 incident, the school administration claimed that the scammers posed as officials from the Ministry of Education before escaping with the visitor's book that had parents' names and phone numbers.

“People in the white saloon claiming to be from the education office were here. Kindly note and spread the news.

"They may want to use it to con parents. A parent has already been conned Ksh9,000,” read the statement at the time.
