Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Monday, January 10, unveiled details of a deal he made with the Vice President of the Sudan Transitional Sovereignty Council, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
Gachagua sought to boost trade and business between the two countries.
In his speech, the DP disclosed that he invited Dagalo to his Harambee House Annex office in Nairobi CBD to explore areas of mutual interest.
"Kenya and Sudan have enjoyed cordial relations for many years and that is why I invited you here today.
“We need to explore areas for us to explore possibilities of greater cooperation in matters of trade and business between Sudan and Kenya,” Gachagua told Dagalo.
The Deputy President emphasised the agricultural sector, particularly the tea industry, as one of the areas that required a deeper partnership.
“We are glad that your country imports a lot of our tea and we are looking forward to you importing more because our quality is unparalleled across the globe,” the DP urged Dagalo.
In a separate statement, Gachagua added that the two leaders also discussed peace in the East African region encompassing the DRC struggle
“We discussed matters of peace in the region and the need for brotherhood between our two countries,” the statement added.
Sudan is one of the greatest importers of Kenyan goods and products.
According to the United Nations Comtrade (2023) database, Kenya exported goods worth Ksh8 billion to Sudan in 2021.
The top exported goods according to Trading Economics were; tea, coffee, tobacco, and pharmaceutical products.
Over the same period, Sudan exported goods worth Ksh1.3 billion to Kenya with cereals accounting for over 90 per cent.
