Police march in formation to get from one point to another or while honouring a VIP at a formal parade and during the pass-out parade for the new recruits.

During pass-out parades, new police officers march in unison before the Head of State to portray some of the values and lessons learnt during the training session.

The whole exercise requires sharper precision as it marks their transition from civilian into different police units in the country.

According to the Administration police service's statement dated Wednesday, January 11, the drills teach new cops adherence to standards.

"Did you know that drill teaches adherence to standards, response to commands, individual coordination, teamwork, the spirit of the formation, alertness, urgency, confidence, followership, attention to detail, leadership...?" the administration police statement read in part.

Regular police units, administrative police officers, and other major units, such as Presidential Escort Unit, have different drills they perform during the pass-out parade.

Drills Performed During Pass-out Parade

Drills With Weapons

This type of drill is performed when police officers are carrying weapons while receiving commands from the squadron's leader.

While carrying a gun, police officers stand at attention with weapons touching the outside of the right foot parallel to the seam of the trouser.

At port arms, new police recruits move the weapon from the ground with one hand and then grasp the gun with the other hand in a drill that signifies steadfastness and precision in action.

Marching Basics Drills

Cops perform different marching drills during the pass-out parade. The marching basics portray their adherence to commands, attention, and coordination.

Individual Drills

In an individual drill formation, cops execute precise movements from one formation to another or march from one place to another.

This type of drill signifies their unit dependence and ability to collaborate effectively with other units.

Rest Positions Drills

Cops execute different rest positions during the pass-out parade, which include parade rest, at ease rest, and fall out.

According to US Air Force, the rest drills test the cops' ability to focus and respond swiftly thereafter in case of an attack.
