A family in Kitui County demanded justice for the death of their 26-year-old son who was allegedly shot dead by police officers on Wednesday, January 12, under unclear circumstances.
Recounting the incident, the father of the deceased stated that two officers woke his family up at 11:00 pm, before roughing up and arresting his two sons.
The father explained that one of the officers dragged his 26-year-old son out of the house to the door and shot him in the stomach.
“I started screaming but one of the officers told me to remain silent,” the man stated.
The father added that the officer shot his son a second time before dragging his other son to a local police station.
Brother to the deceased recalled that the police officers detained him at the police station for a few hours and grilled him about his brother's conduct, before releasing him to go home.
“When he came out of the house, they shot him, left him on the floor, and forced me to go with them to the police station,” the brother narrated.
The family appealed to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and other relevant authorities to investigate the matter and give them answers on why their son was killed.
“I don't have any relationship with any police officer or the chief, so I do not understand why anyone would have trouble with my family,” the man lamented.
The officers have since been detained at Mwingi police station awaiting arraignment.
On Monday, January 9, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) issued a warning over an increase in crime committed by thugs presenting themselves as police officers to unsuspecting Kenyans.
The detectives noted an alarming trend of thugs donning police uniforms to confuse Kenyans before robbing them of their valuables.
