Collins Kipleting, also known by his stage name Rengstar, was arrested in December 2022 for impersonating Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua through his Facebook page.
Kipleting had shared a pay bill number for Kenyans to donate to those affected by the ravaging drought using the identity details of the DP.
However, speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Kipleting noted that no money was sent to his account through the number.
To prove his claims, he emphasised that detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that he had not received any money.
The musician added that he would like to meet the DP and apologise in person as well as appeal for help to boost his career.
According to Kipleting, the public apology will help clear his image that has been soiled in his native Sugoi.
"My friends fundraised the Ksh50,000 fine for my release but when I got home, people did not fully accept me. This apology will help clear my name," Kipleting stated.
He expressed intentions to ask Gachagua to fund a studio for him to record his music. The musician added that the studio will also be a platform for other upcoming musicians.
The 22-year-old stated that the scam he carried out was only aimed at propelling his career.
"I had placed a link to my music on the Facebook page so that people could see that Gachagua listens to my music. I just wanted to grow my Youtube subscribers," he stated.
While appearing at the Milimani Law Courts in early January 2023, he pleaded for a job and other employment opportunities to build a career in Information Technology.
Kipleting detailed that after his form four, he joined a local institution but dropped out due to financial constraints. He then turned to boda boda in a bid to make ends meet which was also challenging.
Cases of Kenyans impersonating politicians and their family members have been on the rise with a recent case of a man arrested of impersonating Gachagua's wife Dorcas Rigathi and promising loans of up to Ksh200,0000.
