Former Veteran Nation Media Group (NMG) photojournalist William Oeri passed on in a fatal car crash along the Kenol Sagana road in Murang'a County.
Oeri was involved in a head-on collision on Sunday, January 15 at around 3 pm.
The accident was confirmed by police from the Makuyu police station according to the Occurrence Book (OB) records seen by Kenyans.co.ke.
"Reporting of a fatal injury road accident that occurred on Sunday, January 15 at about 3 pm at Kitini area along Kenol Sagana Road," read part of the police records.
According to the police, the journalist was alone in the car and was from Sagana heading to Kenol.
However, he reportedly failed to stick to his side of the road and collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle heading to Sagana from Kenol. Oeri's vehicle burst into flames due to the impact.
"Members of the public used sand to put off the fire before the fire brigade from Kenol came and completely put off the fire. Both cars were extensively damaged," the records added.
The driver and the passenger of the second vehicle sustained minor injuries.
His body was moved to the General Kago funeral home in Thika while the vehicle was towed and detained at the station's yard pending inspection.
Oeri also worked with the People Daily. Additionally, before joining the media industry, he had earlier served the country in the army as a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer.
In the past few months, the media fraternity mourned the loss of veteran journalists, Catherine Kasavuli and Geoffrey Mwavizo, both served at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) before their deaths.
Kasavuli died in December 2022 after battling cancer while Mwavizo succumbed to kidney failure while undergoing treatment in January 2023.
