Gachagua Makes Changes in Kericho Leadership, Fires Warning to All Speakers

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Thursday, January 19, announced changes to Kericho County Assembly's UDA leadership.

In an address to the press on Thursday, January 19, Gachagua directed that Philip Rono, who serves as Kamasian Ward representative, be reinstated as the Majority Leader. Rono will be deputised by Francis Chepkorir.

Haroun Rotich of Cheptororiet was retained as the Majority Whip and Serem was elected as his deputy.

Additionally, Gachagua issued a warning to the Kericho County Assembly Speaker Patrick Mutai and all the other county assembly speakers noting that they risked being removed from their positions if they defied the orders issued by the UDA party.

The Deputy President further stated that the party had establish that the conflict at Kericho County Assembly was caused by a tussle for leadership. 

“The mandate has been made with a view of restoring normalcy so that the people of Kericho can enjoy development,” Gachagua directed.

“The UDA party has a manifesto and the party is expected to support the executive to achieve our mandate and that can only happen where there is unity in leadership,” he added.

The county assembly leadership was changed for the fifth time in five months. 

Additionally, the Deputy President added that he would be chairing a meeting with the leadership of Meru to conclude the issues surrounding the leadership of the county.

The County Assembly Speaker Patrick Mutai was summoned to appear before the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Disciplinary Committee on Friday, January 20, to explain why he ignored orders made by the party regarding the leadership of the assembly. 

"As a member of the party, you are expected to conduct your affairs in a manner that promotes its image, interests, and accords to its values and principles, a duty which you failed to discharge in this instance," the letter addressed to Mutai read in part.

During a rally at Bomet Green Stadium on Sunday, January 15,  President William Ruto addressed the chaos at the assembly asking the MCAs to find a solution and focus on the delivery of their promises.

"I can see others are still fighting for power. Kericho MCAs, stop being foolish, I am not impressed with the games you are playing. It is not time to fight for power. You are even losing a lot of time in the county assembly fighting each other,” Ruto Warned.
