Former Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) Chairperson Sarah Serem landed yet another State job after taking over as the Chairperson of the Kenya Post Office Savings Bank (Postbank).

Serem took over the leadership mantle of the State Corporation, where her career started as a junior officer, from the outcoming Chairman, Ntoros Baari Ole Senteu.

Her appointment was confirmed in a Gazette Notice dated January 13, 2023, and she is expected to serve for three years.

Ambassador Serem while taking the reigns at Postbank headquarters stated that she was delighted to return back to Postbank.

“I look forward to working with the Bank’s leadership to meet our customers' and stakeholders' needs as well as advance the savings agenda of the country seeing as we are the institution mandated by the Government to mobilize national savings,” she remarked.

The former SRC Chairperson expressed enthusiasm toward Postbank's future opportunities, especially considering how the country has responded to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.

“This growth momentum continues to generate business opportunities for the financial sector which will benefit Postbank and other financial institutions,” the experienced administrator ended.

Her career has been that of an upward trajectory having started out as a junior officer in the Corporation.

Upon graduating from University, Serem secured a job at the Kenya Posts and Telecommunications Corporation where she worked as a personnel officer for eight years.

She would later work as the deputy human resource officer of Kenya Post Office Savings Bank in the human resource department.

However, Serem sought early retirement from service to pursue personal projects where together with her friend established a company named Young Biz, a multinational trading company that sharpens entrepreneurship skills in young people.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed her in 2011 before she got sworn into office in 2012 as the Salaries and Remuneration Commission chairperson.

As the head of SRC, the 64-year-old would get into crossroads with legislators after she went after their perks.

In 2017, she moved to slash salaries for all state officers including abolishing grants and all allowances a Parliamentarian enjoys including sitting and mileage allowance.

Upon completion of her term at the SRC, Serem was replaced by Lyn Mengich before being appointed as Kenya's ambassador to China, with her term being compounded by the Covid-19 crisis.

Apart from her illustrious public service, she is a family person who has value for education illustrated in her children’s endeavours.

Her firstborn, Juliet Serem Kiboma, is a practising architect in the USA while her second-born, Karen Serem Waithaka, is a finance and investment consultant.

Her third-born, Daisy Serem, is a communications officer with UNICEF, and her last-born, Chemtai Serem, is a medical doctor. Her adopted son is Dennis Serem, an automotive technician. She is also a grandmother of six.

She replaces Ntoros Baari Ole Senteu who served as the Bank’s board chairperson for three years.
