Govt Issues Ultimatum to Owners of Bodas & Cars Held at Police Yard

Owners of motorcycles and vehicles held at the Kabete Police yard were given 30 days to collect their property lest they be auctioned.

In the gazette notice dated February 3, owners were urged to be prompt to collect the goods or face the outcome.

"To the public/owners/custodians of motor vehicles, motorcycles and assorted stores which are lying idle and unclaimed within Kabete Police yard, to collect their vehicles at the said yard within thirty (30) days from the date of publication of this notice," the notice read in parts.

More boda bodas were left lying in the police yard compared to the number of cars.

"Failure to which Makys auctioneers, shall proceed to dispose of the said motor vehicles, motorcycle by a way of public auction on behalf or Kabete Police Station if they remain unclaimed," read part of the notice.

The motorcycles list included brands like Dayun, Boxer, Tigers, Yamaha, Captain, Honda, and TVS, among others.

Some of the cars in the list include Toyota Harrier, Nissan Datsun Pick-up, Toyota Camry, Toyota Passo, Subaru Forester, etc.

According to the notice, some boda bodas and cars lacked registration plates.

Reportedly most of the vehicles at the police yards are wreckages awaiting collection by the owners or insurance companies, while others are impounded for violating different traffic offences.

According to the National Police Act, police officers can auction these vehicles after getting approval from a magistrate.

Once granted permission, the police ought to direct the owners to collect the items within a set period, and when the time lapses, the vehicles can be auctioned to the public.

The money collected from such auctions is put in consolidated funds.
