Two sisters in Runyejes, Embu County, embarked on a 25 kilometres walk aimed at raising Ksh2.2 million to clear a pending bill for their deceased brother.

The orphaned sisters, Doris Mumbi and Purity Murugi, on Saturday, February 4, disclosed that their 16-year-old brother had been detained at the Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.

They added that their brother, Eric Mutugi, passed away on January 16 but is yet to be laid to rest due to a Ksh2.2 million bill.

Doris revealed that the family had only raised Ksh225,000 after walking on Saturday, February 4. She appealed to well-wishers to help them raise the money to accord their brother a befitting send-off.

She further noted that her family was optimistic that they would raise Ksh300,000 and convince the hospital to release his body.

Mutugi was a first-year student pursuing a medical course at the Thika Medical Training College. It is, however, not clear what caused his death.

The residents also appealed to the national government to step in, waive hospital and mortuary bills, and save the two girls from agony.

A youth group from Runyejes joined the two sisters in the 25-kilometer walk to raise money.

Addressing the media, Caroline Mbae, a neighbour to the deceased, lamented that the two sisters had been through mental torture since Mutugi passed on.

She further revealed that their parents had passed on 15 years ago.

"The two sisters are going through mental torture since their late brother, who was their hope, died and matters have been made worse because they are yet to bury him," Mbae stated.

Runyenjes Constituency youth team leader Kelvin Mwendani appealed to the national government led by President William Ruto to chip in and help the two sisters raise Ksh2.2 million to help them bury their kin.
