Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's term as the African Union High Representative for Infrastructure ended following changes by the continental body.

In a letter addressed to Raila by African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Moussa Faki shared by Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing'oei it was noted that the organisation's infrastructure duties were being taken up by the African Union Development Agency - NEPAD.

In the letter, Faki also congratulated the ODM boss for his input during his tenure which saw the department gain prominence in the organisation.

"The transformation of the NEPAD Agency to African Union Development Agency. NEPAD has now been completed, with a full mandate to implement the Continental agenda on infrastructure," the chairperson noted

"It is my distinct honour to write to you with respect to your mandate as AU High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa.

"Your exceptional leadership and unique command of the issues concerned, has been crucial to leveraging infrastructure as a key priority within the Continental agenda," read the letter in part.

Raila was appointed in October 2018 after the famous handshake with former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Further, Faki wished the ODM boss all the best in his future endeavours.

"The African Union hopes to continue counting on your support for other possible assignments.

"Wishing you all the best in your future endeavours, please accept, Excellency, the expression of my highest consideration and personal esteem," read the statement in part.

Our attempts to reach Raila for a comment on the matter proved futile.

The letter by the AU came amid calls to have Raila stripped off the international duty given that a number of Kenya Kwanza legislators opined that he was destabilising the country with the recent rallies.

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei stated that Ruto also needed to have Uhuru replaced given that he was still active in politics.

"Uhuru has declined the peace envoy role for Ethiopia peace talks. It looks like the role of chairmanship of Azimio-OKA/opposition role is making him very busy. Ruto should swiftly appoint another eminent Kenyan," the senator stated then.
