Govt to Replace 10 University Vice Chancellors in One Swoop, List of Those Affected

The government has moved to replace Vice Chancellors (VCs) across 10 public universities in Kenya in one go as the state seeks to shake up the higher education sector.

On Tuesday, February 28, the Public Service Commission (PSC) published an advertisement in local dailies calling for applications for the positions of VC and Deputy Vice Chancellors.

Among the universities affected include the Technical University of Kenya (TUK).

"Pursuant to the provisions of Section 35(1)(a)(v) of the Universities Act  2012, PSC invites applications from the suitability qualified persons for the following vacant positions in public universities

"All applications should reach the Commission on or before March 20, 2023, by 5 p.m.," the notice read in part.

Other positions advertised per university are as follows:

Pwani University: VC, DVC Academic and Student Affairs, and DVC Research and Extension.

Kisii University: VC and DVC Administration Planning and Finance

Karatina University: VC, DVC (Academic, Research and Student Affairs) and DVC (Planning, Finance and Administration).

University of Eldoret: VC and DVC Academic and Students Affairs

Machakos University: VC and DVC Administration Planning and Finance.

South Eastern  Kenya University (SEKU): VC and DVC Academic, Research and Innovation.

Tom Mboya University: DVC Academic, Research and Students Affairs

University of Kabianga: VC and DVC Administration and Finance

Alupe University: VC, DVC (Academic, Research and Student Affairs) and DVC Administration Finance and Development

According to the Universities Act the VC and DVC are appointed by the council in consultation with the Cabinet Secretary following a competitive process conducted by PSC.

The act defines the VC as the chief executive of the university and the academic and administrative head of the university.

In addition, the holder of the office has the overall responsibility for the direction, organization, administration and programmes of the university; and has such responsibilities and duties as may be provided for in the Charter.
