Community media journalists and correspondents stand a chance to win up to Kshs200,000 in grant money from Media Council of Kenya (MCK).

In a press release, MCK on Wednesday, February 1, announced that the special journalism grant targeted accredited community media and correspondents working under strenuous circumstances countrywide.

The journalists will be paid Ksh20,000 per story and every journalist will be eligible to publish a maximum of ten stories.

“Correspondents and reporters from the counties who have written, published and broadcast stories over the last three months – December 2022 to February 2023 are eligible for the grants,” MCK announced.

In total, 200 journalists will benefit from the grants according to MCK.

“The grants are aimed at ensuring high professional standards as journalists grapple with financial challenges in the changing media space,” MCK announced.

Journalists will be required to publish stories on select topics so as to be considered for the grants.

Topics to be considered include; development reporting, health reporting, ICT and telecommunications reporting and gender reporting.

Other acceptable topics include; environment reporting, sports reporting, innovation and business reporting and agriculture and food security.

The grant is among initiatives undertaken by the Council to promote the welfare of journalists by cushioning them from the ensuing economic shocks in media organisations.

How to apply

Eligible candidates are required to apply online through the MCK website www(dot)mediacouncil(dot)or(dot)ke/form/grant-application

Through the application portal, journalists will be required to provide their full names, email addresses and phone number.

They will then write a short message on why they should be considered for the grant and provide a link to their published stories.
