The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) notified motorists that it will be completing the ongoing construction along Haile Selassie Avenue leading out of the Central Business District (CBD) on Sunday, March 5.

According to the announcement made on Thursday, March 2, KURA will have completed the strengthening of the footbridge which connects the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) to the Kenya City Square Post Office, and will therefore be open for use.

The agency noted that the road, which serves motorists from different routes including those using Mombasa Road and Ngong Road, will be open for use even on the weekends

KURA further explained that the construction would be completed on March 5, at midnight, and the bridge will be opened from Monday, March 6.

“Please note, works for strengthening the Central Bank of Kenya - City Square Post office foot bride will be completed on Sunday, March 5, at midnight.

“We thank all motorists and pedestrians for their patience and cooperation,” KURA stated.

Motorists and members of the public had been earlier on February 11, advised to use alternative routes like Moi Avenue, Uhuru Highway, and Kenyatta Avenue on Saturdays and Sundays.

“Haile Selassie avenue will be closed from Saturday, February 18, at midnight to Sunday, February 19, at midnight. On Saturday, February 25, at midnight to Sunday, February 26, at midnight, the same exercise will be repeated.

“We regret any inconvenience caused and urge members of the public to cooperate as we strive to enhance urban mobility,” announced KURA.

The renovation of the bridge came after protests by students of the Technical University of Kenya on Thursday, December 8, who stated that their lives were in danger adding that many of them had sustained life-threatening injuries while attempting to cross the busy Haile Selassie Avenue.

The students pleaded with President William Ruto to order the construction of a new bridge linking the campus to the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).

The footbridge was destroyed by a trailer hauling an excavator during the construction of Haile Selassie Avenue pavements leading to a closure of the bridge in 2020.
