President William Ruto secured Ksh6.2 billion in funding from the Hungarian Government after a meeting with the Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament, László Kövér, at the State House.

During the meeting held on Tuesday, March 7, Ruto announced that part of the funds will be used in setting up the Dedan Kimathi Comprehensive Cancer Management in Nyeri.

Additionally, the funds will be used for the establishment of the Kabonyo Regional Service and Training Centre of Excellence and the rehabilitation of the Ahero Irrigation Scheme in Kisumu County.

During the meeting, Ruto also directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora to open an embassy in Budapest, the capital city of Hungary.

"The embassy will help escalate the relations between our two countries," Ruto explained.

The Head of State, therefore, ordered that the process should begin immediately and the mission should be up in a span of two years or less.

The two leaders also discussed climate change which has affected most parts of the world and deliberated on several ways to mitigate the crisis.

"The world is at a crossroads, do we continue with fossil fuels and burn the globe or do we go the clean energy route and save the world?" Ruto posed.

While in Kenya for an official visit, Kövér met the Speaker of the Senate Amason Kingi, and his counterpart from the National Assembly Moses Wetangula on Monday, March 6.

Kingi praised the Hungarian government for offering 200 scholarships to Kenyan students every year as a way to offer quality education to learners in Kenya.

"We do not take this gesture for granted. Your government has supported Kenya in health projects in Nyeri County and water as well as agriculture in Bungoma and Kisumu counties," Kingi added.

On the other hand, Wetangula lauded the continued collaboration between the two countries to oversee development projects.

“Parliament to Parliament associations are key to feed into the bigger picture of country- country bilateral engagements on various initiatives including doing business as Kenya is working towards expanding her trading partnerships”, Wetangula stated.
