Former Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang'i was released on Tuesday, March 7, after hours of grilling at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters along Kiambu Road.

Matiang'i walked out of the DCI headquarters accompanied by his legal team.

His release came moments after Azimio leader Raila Odinga arrived at the agency's headquarters to protest his detention, accompanied by a host of politicians.

The opposition chief was, however, denied access to the DCI offices, whose security was beefed up before Matiang'i's arrival.

Lawyer Otiende Amollo told the press that the detention of Matiang'i for nine hours was unlawful and accused the DCI of being used to fight political battles.

"It is clear that this was not a criminal investigation. This was a vendetta and witch hunt!

"It is also clear that the DCI was not acting of their own motion, but were awaiting instructions on what to do with Dr Matiang’i,"  Amollo remarked.

The Senior Counsel cautioned Interior CS Kithure Kindiki against the bosses he accused of undermining his docket.

"When the government thinks it is mistreating Dr Matiang’i as a person, you are lowering the standing of the office he held and the standing of our country even before foreigners.

"You are demonstrating to everyone that we are not a stable democracy and are headed towards a banana republic and that will come to bite the very people doing that to our client," he stated.

Matiang'i's former cabinet colleague Eugene Wamalwa watered down the charges preferred by the DCI against the former CS, terming them unfounded.

Matiang'i was summoned to shed light on the alleged raid by police at his home in February.
