Azimio La Umoja Leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday, March 7, made a surprise visit to the precincts of Parliament where he held meetings with various individuals.
Speaking at Parliament buildings, Raila lamented that the Senate leadership was out to frustrate the efforts of Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition.
The ODM chief warned Speaker Amason Kingi against working with unnamed individuals to influence political leadership.
“I hear the speaker of the Senate is stubborn in effecting the changes the house leadership made by the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Parliamentary group meeting,” he stated.
The former Prime Minister visited Parliament for the first time since losing the disputed August 2022 General Election.
He wants Speaker Kingi to effect the changes, and allow disputes to be settled by members of Azimio without the input of the Kenya Kwanza wing.
Raila warned Kingi that his coalition will not relent until the proposed changes are made as previously directed by the party.
“I want to urge the speaker to allow the effect of the changes,” Raila urged Speaker Kingi.
The opposition chief noted that the changes that were made by Azimio were in the interest of the coalition, and the Speaker is not by law allowed to stop them.
On Wednesday, February 15, 2023, Raila announced that Steward Madzayo would be the Minority leader and he would be deputised by Senator Enoch Wambua.
Raila promoted Narok Senator Ledama Olekina as the chief whip and would be deputised by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
However, Speaker Kingi refused to recognise the changes, citing an order that barred him from considering the changes that were effected by Raila.
“They are saying that they received an order from the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal. Parliament cannot be indicted by the tribunal," Raila noted.
Raila asked Kingi to observe the Principle of Separation of Powers and announce the changes as soon as possible.
