A multi-agency police team on Sunday, March 12, gunned down two suspected armed robbers hours after they staged a robbery at a Sacco's branch in Murang'a County.
In a report by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the agency revealed that officers from the Crime Research and Investigations Bureau were deployed to support colleagues in tracking down the miscreants.
The two, who were part of a gang of six thieves who raided the sacco's branch, were traced to their hideout in Kigumo.
"The officers engaged the thugs in Kinyona Forest at around 9a.m who shot at them during the early morning operation, linking them on the spot" the statement read in part.
In addition, the police officers recovered a bag containing Ksh1.13 million in cash, including two stashes of brand new Ksh200 notes bearing the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) seal.
Officers recovered two rifles stolen from their colleagues including a G3 rifle snatched from a cop manning the bank during the raid on March 11.
"The marauding gang of six on February 25, wrestled an AK-47 rifle loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition from a police officer on patrol within Muthithi area, which they used for the robbery," DCI reported.
Bodies of the deceased were ferried to the Murang'a Level V Hospital Mortuary awaiting identification. Police officers also launched a manhunt for their accomplices.
However, the report by the DCI raised more questions with a Kenyan putting the agency to task about why they deleted images of the dead suspects.
In the image which could not be independently verified by Kenyans.co.ke, two men dressed in similar clothes to those gunned down were spotted alive, seated, and surrounded by a number of officers.
"You deleted this post. So they (suspects) were arrested and tied up then ended up engaging the officers in a shoot-out? Secondly, the unknown amount became Ksh1.3 million after some time?" The tweep inquired.
At the time of publishing, the DCI was yet to respond to the queries raised by members of the public.
