President William Ruto on Wednesday, March 15 officially appointed Shadrack John Mose as Kenya's new Solicitor General after he sailed through Parliament.

The announcement was made through a special Gazette notice issued by State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 9 (1) of the Office of the Attorney-General Act, 2012, I, William Samoei Ruto, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, appoint Shadrack John Mose to be the Solicitor-General of the Republic of Kenya," read part of the statement.

Mose now replaces Kennedy Ogeto, who was appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta (Rtd) in March 2018.

While appearing before the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs (JLAC) on February 23, Mose affirmed that he would vouch for better working conditions for government officials including remuneration.

He further argued that most government officials especially those at the Registrar of Marriage offices quit their jobs to escape the poor working conditions.

“I urge this committee to assist us in securing increased budgetary allocation to be able to equip the State Law Office and retain qualified, competent officers," he told the committee.

According to Mose, the move was aimed at engaging more state counsels, training them both locally and internationally to boost their capacity in dealing with complex issues that may arise.

The lawyer with over 29 years of legal expertise has delved into tax law, insurance law, constitutional law, employment law, and banking law among other professional areas.

Additionally, between 2017 and 2022, he held the parliamentary seat for Kitutu Masaba Constituency.

Notably, one of the functions of the Solicitor-General is to assist the Attorney General to perform the duties of the government's principal legal advisor.

"The Solicitor-General shall carry out any function, discharge any duty, and exercise any power as may be directed by the Attorney-General," reads part of the Office of the Attorney-General Act, 2012.
