Solicitor General Nominee Exposes Neglect of Govt Marriage Workers

Solicitor General nominee, Shadrack John Mose, claimed that staff at the Registrar of Marriages offices were working under deplorable conditions.

During his vetting on Thursday, February 23, before the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs (JLAC),  Mose argued that most government officials quit to escape the challenges.

Moreover, he added that the state officials are not well compensated for the heavy workload they are subjected to.  

He pledged to prioritise reducing the issue which undermines service delivery and administration of justice.

“Look at the registrar of marriages section, the environment is not conducive, and the office and other sections are too squeezed. These are some of the issues I want addressed.

“I urge this committee to assist us secure increased budgetary allocation to be able to equip the state law office and retain qualified, competent officers,” Mose stated.

Government officials, he underlined, needs to be properly trained and empowered to deal with arising issues. 

“The budgetary allocation will also enable us to engage more state counsels, train them locally and internationally,” Mose added.

Aside from addressing issues of poor working conditions, the nominee revealed his financial net worth of Ksh 250 million.

He explained that some of his earnings originate from rental houses that he owned, land, and shares from his law firm.  

President William Ruto nominated the former Kitutu Masaba MP as the next Solicitor General on February 12, to succeed Kennedy Ogeto whose term ends in March 2023.

“This is in recognition of the mandate of the Solicitor General as the Deputy to the Principal Legal Adviser to the Government,” Ruto’s letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula read in part.

The role of the Solicitor-General is to assist the Attorney-General in the performance of duties as the government's principal legal advisor.
