Governor Johnson Sakaja approved a redevelopment plan for 18 Nairobi estates following a meeting with County Executive Committee (CEC) members on Wednesday, March 22.

The revamp plan came after the County Executive Committee members approved the Nairobi City County Eastlands Urban Renewal Local Physical Development Plan.

According to the plan, the redevelopment of 18 Nairobi estates in the Eastland area would focus on rehabilitating houses, improving the transport system, and introducing stormwater management.

Other plans include sewerage management, energy, water supply, education, health, improving community facilities, disaster management, heritage preservation and general environmental management.

"It is a development framework envisaged to guide the redevelopment process in Eastlands, an area covering 18 government estates and surrounding private neighbourhoods," the dispatch from Nairobi County Executive Committee members meeting read in part.

"The project area covers 12.64 square kilometers marked by Eastleigh 1st Avenue and Nairobi River to the north, Outer Ring Road to the east, the CBD and Embakasi railway line to the south, and Ring Road Ngara, Muranga Roads to the west," it added.

Maringo, Mbotela, Kaloleni, Bahati, Landhies, Jerusalem, Jericho, Lumumba, and Uhuru were among the estates listed in the plan.

Other areas were around Makongeni estate, Bondeni, Gorofani, Shauri Moyo, Ziwani, Starehe, Kariokor, Majengo, and Makadara.

In the housing sector, Sakaja's administration sought to address the housing deficit, the dilapidation of housing and infrastructural networks, informal structures, and encroachments into public spaces.

Expansion of the major corridors to support the various infrastructure and service improvements also features in the Nairobi City County Eastlands Urban Renewal Local Physical Development Plan.

It proposed the provision of new passenger and freight termini, parking facilities, road expansion, and the development of missing link roads.

When the redevelopment begins, sewerage pre-treatment sites will also be created to improve the sewage management system before offloading into the main city trunk sewer.

Besides setting up social amenities and improving infrastructure, the Nairobi City County Eastlands Urban Renewal Local Physical Development Plan proposed preserving heritage centres by collaborating with various government agencies.

Further, Sakaja's County Executive Committee members adopted the memorandum on establishing and operationalising boroughs.

A manager would lead each borough in charge of a cluster of sub-counties within specifically assigned areas.
