Moja Expressway Company on Friday, March 24, denounced a post insinuating that the Nairobi Expressway will be closed for two days, on Mondays and Thursdays, to allow Azimio protests.

A post had surfaced on social media platforms claiming that the government had restricted the protests to the Expressway only.

According to the statement, the government had reportedly allowed Azimio to hold its protests on the condition that the protestors picket on the elevated way stretching from Mlolongo to Westlands - a move that would reportedly see cars blocked from the elevated highway for two days.

In a statement, the Moja Expressway refuted the claims and dismissed them as fake. The management also assured users that the Expressway would remain open for 24 hours every day.

In addition, the company warned the public that non-motorised traffic was strictly prohibited on the highway and that any person found walking or picketing on the road would be taken in as a trespasser.

“We would wish to refute the claims and assure the public that no demonstrations will be held on the Nairobi Expressway, with normal operations continuing daily on a 24-hour basis.

"We would also wish to caution the public against peddling untrue and sensationalized content regarding the Nairobi Expressway's operations and will not hesitate to take legal action in the event one is found guilty of the offence," Moja Expressway assured.

On Thursday, March 24, Azimio leaders led by former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya delivered a notice of their planned protests to the Nairobi Central Officer in Charge of the Police Station (OCS).

This followed an earlier announcement by Nairobi Police Commandant Adamson Bungei stating that a notice presented to him was void unless it was handed to the police station as provided for in the law.

"The law says the notification be served to the regulating officer and in this case, it is the OCS of the jurisdiction where they plan to protest, therefore if they plan to start at Kilimani they serve the OCS Kilimani and so forth not necessarily me," Bungei stated.

On their part. Azimio leaders remained adamant that they did not require permission from the police as a condition to proceed with their protests.

Azimio also tendered a notice informing the police of its plan to hold protests across the 47 counties on Monday, March 27 and Thursday, March 30.
