Professional hitmen were involved in the murder of Edward and Sarah Morema, according to a preliminary police report released on Friday, March 24.
Masaba North Sub-county Police Commander, Robert Ndambili, detailed that key leads pointed to a land tussle as the motive behind the murders, given that the couple similarly lost their nephew in 2021.
Edwards and Sarah's hands were tied to the back using a wire, and their throats slit.
The police boss detailed that the killers left no traces behind and executed the murder in a fashion only expert hitmen can orchestrate.
The killers also took key CCTV systems away, hampering the detectives from recovering the footage.
Detectives in the case also unravelled the identity of a mystery man who visited the couple on the fateful night. According to the house helps account, the couple received a visitor that evening.
The man was unknown to the house help; however, his engagements with the couple indicated they were familiar. Police suspected the guest was among the hitmen who committed the murder and was on a reconnaissance.
"We are engaging higher mechanisms of rounding them up. This will take some time,” Ndambili stated.
Police also sought to understand how the house help - who was sleeping upstairs - did not hear any noise or altercation.
"It is unbelievable that the house help and farmboy were present in the compound when the murder was happening, and yet they could not tell something was going on wrong," the police boss indicated.
According to detectives, the house help went on with her chores the following morning as usual - further adding mystery to the murders.
She only reacted after an alarm was reportedly raised by the couple's grandson, Samuel Matundura, at 10 am, when her grandparents were unreachable on the phone.
“We had talked, and we agreed to meet. He had been in Western Kenya for some construction activities and had just returned home.
"So I wanted to know how they were doing,” Matundura stated after he rushed to check on his grandparents.
