All Saints Cathedral Provost Dr Sammy Wainaina on Sunday, March 26, confirmed that he would be relocating to London for his new role in the Anglican Church.
Speaking during the service, Assistant Archbishop of the Cathedral's diocese Prof Joseph Galgalo confirmed that Wainaina was appointed Advisor to the archbishop of Canterbury.
He read the message on behalf of Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit, who had given the blessing for the Provost to take up the new role.
"By mutual agreement and the Archbishop's blessing, the provost accepted the offer. The position would be in the office of the Anglican communion (ACO) and he will be based in London.
"It is a joy that one of our own has been recognized and given such high honor to a high office and we are in Godly pride, proud of him," Galgalo told the congregation
The Assistant Bishop revealed that Dr Wainaina would leave the church at the end of June 2023 after serving a three-month notice.
Wainaina joined All Saints in 2010 and rose to the position of provost in 2013. Based on his performance, the church renewed his five-year contract for a second and final five-year term.
However, towards the end of his service, the clergyman was approached by several missions to serve with them. He rejected the majority save for that from Canterbury.
"Last year in June, when one of those officers came, he (Wainaina) prayerfully considered it and shared it with Archbishop Ole Sapit and made a decision by November," Galgalo explained.
In a past interview, the priest revealed that he received his calling as a student at Cherengany High School in Trans Nzoia. Initially, he wanted to study Law.
"People spoke into my life and said that I should become a minister of the gospel. I decided that I would pursue Theology," the Provost noted.
Wainaina disclosed that his family discouraged him from taking the path since he was a bright student and argued that being a clergyman would not see him accomplish his potential.
In February, the provost went viral for calling on President William Ruto to lead by example and declare his wealth to encourage transparency in his government.
"Leaders create cultures. One of the cultures the president would do is to declare his wealth. Let him declare his wealth and everyone else in government should declare. Let this government be known as a government that has zero tolerance on corruption," Dr Wainaina made the remarks while appearing on JKLive.
In January 2021, he questioned why the (Rtd.) President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga spent so much money on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) yet the government could not provide essential services.
"We have money for BBI yet we do not have the same to build schools as our children learn under trees. Counties cannot receive 15 per cent of their allocation yet we are being told that they will get 35 per cent if BBI is passed," Wainaina remarked.
Amid a tense transition period in September 2022, he pleaded with Kenyans not to heckle Uhuru during the handing over ceremony.
