Kwee Farewell Parlour, situated at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu, was vandalised and property looted on Thursday, March 30
According to Kisumu Governor Peter Anyang Nyong'o, unknown individuals carried away, computers and other valuable equipment recently bought and fixed at the facility.
They also damaged the farewell home, launched by Governor Nyong'o on Tuesday, March 28, to rival the likes of Lee Funeral Home and Montezuma.
"I am shocked at the barbaric and criminal incident where goons posing as protesters, this evening broke into the newly launched Kwee Farewell Home, at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu, damaged and looted expensive morgue equipment which I just commissioned two days ago," Nyong'o wrote.
He condemned the police, arguing they did not act swiftly to disperse the rowdy youth who looted supermarkets in Kisumu.
Kwee was launched to offer professional, reliable, customised services, including postmortem, embalming, viewing, and forensics.
"The postmodern method at Kwee is a modern type that entails not opening the body but drawing samples from the body using needles," Kisumu County indicated.
It was set up at the cost of Ksh13 million and was equipped with machines worth Ksh20 million donated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The farewell parlour was built to host 48 bodies easing pressure on other mortuaries in the region.
However, following the attack, the damage was not immediately accounted for by Kisumu County Government.
On Wednesday, March 29, Nyong'o suspended the anti-government protests and rescinded the decision.
"We believe in the rights of Kenyans to peacefully assemble, petition and demonstrate against the government. These expressive and speech rights are ironclad as enshrined in our constitution. We in Azimio fought for these basic freedoms....
"We therefore urge you to turn out in large numbers and join other Kenyans in this liberation struggle," Nyong'o stated.
