The main suspect in the death of Banissa Member of Parliament Kulow Maalim Hassan was on Friday, March 31, arraigned in court.

Appearing before Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Esther Kimilu, the police formally charged the middle-aged man with causing the death of Banissa MP.

However, the suspect denied the four charges and asked the court to release him on a lenient bond since he did not have money for huge bonds.

Principal Magistrate Kimilu released him on a Ksh300,000 cash bail, which he had to pay before being released by the court.

Alternatively, Principal Magistrate Kimilu ordered the suspect to deposit a Ksh500,000 bond with the court before securing his freedom.

While recounting the last moments of Maalim, police noted that the Banissa MP was walking from police band lines towards South B Trading Centre awaiting to be picked up by his driver.

According to investigators, Maalim was knocked down and killed along Daidai Road within South B at around 10.20 pm.

However, the motorbike rider did not stop to help his victim. Instead, he sped off and escaped the scene leaving witnesses behind.

"As a result, he sustained head injuries and was rushed to Nairobi South Hospital by good Samaritans and was later transferred to Aga-Khan Hospital by family members.

"The scene was visited and an investigation commenced," police explained, noting that the investigation was at an advanced stage.
