Last Moments of MP Killed by Boda in Mombasa Road Hit-and-Run

The National Police Service (NPS) on Wednesday, March 29, revealed the last moments of Banisa Member of Parliament Kulow Maalim who was killed in a hit-and-run accident. 

According to police records, on Saturday, March 25, the Banisa MP was walking from police band lines towards South B Trading Centre while waiting to be picked up by his driver.

The police stated that Maalim on striding along Daidai Road within South B at around 10.20 pm when he met his untimely death. 

It was reported by witnesses that a motorbike rider seemed to have lost control and knocked the Member of Parliament.

"As a result, he sustained head injuries and was rushed to Nairobi South Hospital by good Samaritans and later transferred to Agha-Kan Hospital by family members," the Police report detailed. 



The matter was first reported by witnesses who called the police to track the motorbike rider. 

"The scene was visited and an investigation commenced," police explained, noting that the investigation was at an advanced stage. 

It was reported that the witnesses were not able to record the registration number of the motorbike, but they managed to provide accurate details of the bike and its rider. 

However, the police are currently reviewing CCTV footage from Daidai Road, and other adjacent cameras including those installed on Mombasa Road. 

Police revealed that they had picked crucial leads that may lead them to the hit-and-run motorbike rider. 

The Banisa MP was eulogised by colleague legislators and other national leaders including President William Ruto who described him as a devoted leader. 

"I extend my condolences to the family, colleagues, and friends. We have lost a dedicated public servant and a passionate advocate for the people and interests of Mandera County as a whole," eulogised Ruto. 

The Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula remembered Maalim as a towering academic who loved his students and constituents. 

"The Late Hon. Hassan Kulow Maalim was an accomplished teacher. After graduating from Siriba Teachers College, he taught at Wajir High School before proceeding to Sheikh Ali School in Rhamu, Mandera County, where he also served as the Deputy Principal.

"Thereafter, he moved to Kigari Teachers College as a lecturer until 1992 when he changed careers and became the Project Coordinator at the Arid Regional Integrated Agency until 1993. Between 2013 and 2015, the Late Hon. Kulow served the country as a Board Member of the Kenya Airports Authority," Wetangula stated. 

Senator Esther Okenyuri remembered the Banisa MP as one who was passionate about his constituents, especially, in his resolve to create solutions to the challenges that face Mandera County at large. 

"Gutted to hear the news of the demise of Banisa Constituency Member of Parliament Hon. Kulow Maalim Hassan. A very humble legislator.

"I knew Hon. Kulow during my days at the Offices of the Deputy President (2018-2022)when he would follow closely matters related to TVET for his constituents, later we reconnected in the current Parliament. The lessons and example he set with our constant interactions leaves an indelible mark in my heart. Heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives,friends and the people of Banisa Constituency. May His soul rest in eternal peace," Senator Okenyuri noted. 

Maalim's colleagues, Hussein Weytan of Manera East and Kinwezi West lawmaker Mwengi Mutuse also mourned him as a great leader who was dependable. 

"May Allah have mercy on him, forgive his shortcomings, and admit him to Jannah. May Allah give strength and patience to his family, friends, and his constituents to bear the loss. Amen," Weytan remarked.
