Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, on Saturday, April 1, announced plans to put up car inspection centres across the country owing to the recent surge of accidents.

While speaking on the Pwani University accident, Mukomen explained that the move would make regular car inspection mandatory for all vehicles in the country.

The directive, according to Murkomen, who addressed church members at Farouk Kibet's thanksgiving ceremony in Malava, Kakamega, will ensure that all vehicles are roadworthy.

His ministry had already worked on the legislation phase of the directive even as the government looked for investors to partner with in vehicle inspection.

"Car inspection will be different, unlike before. We only have five car inspection centres. We will look for investors to set up car inspections around the country so that we make it mandatory for all cars in Kenya.

"We have completed the regulations with the lawmakers and very soon we will make the advertisement very soon," he stated.

The CS intimated that the Pwani University bus accident - which caused the death of 18 people - was caused by brake failure.

On the other hand, he added that they would put up cameras on major highways, with Mombasa - Kisumu - Busia Highway earmarked for the pilot project.

'We will put cameras from the highway all the way from Mombasa to Kisumu, and there will be instant enforcement. We shall ensure that the cameras are put on the roads this year," he added, highlighting the installations as his second directive.

His third directive centred on traffic offenders being fined instantly after being captured breaking laws.

Regarding passengers, Murkomen expressed that Kenyans needed to keener on the vehicles they were using as he urged them to raise the alarm for traffic offences such as drunk driving.

Additionally, he addressed the destruction of transport infrastructure witnessed during the Azimio rallies adding that he was pushing to have political parties responsible for the demos charged for the maintenance.
