Cases of looting and break-ins shot up after Azimio leader Raila Odinga announced countrywide protests.
On most occasions, rowdy youth take advantage of the protests to break into business premises. The media is replete with images of protesters breaking doors and gaining access into fortified establishments.
Kenyans.co.ke compiled four ways to reinforce your front door, especially during mass action witnessed in parts of Nairobi and Kisumu.
Reinforcing the door frame
Most doors are only one inch thick and can be easily barged into by burglars.
It is important to reinforce the door frame to withstand forceful entry especially if it is made of wood.
This can be achieved by adding a steel layer to prevent the door frame from splitting. A layer of steel can also be added if the door is made of a thin metal plate.
Install a door kick stop
Fitting locks during construction involves removing wood and this in turn, weakens the door frame.
The kick stop door frame reinforces plates and bars that are bolted together through the door or screwed to the internal face of the frame - to resist a 'kick-in' attack and forced entry and so help avoid a burglary.
Install a door chain and a deadbolt
A door chain consists of a small chain attached to the door frame, which attaches to a track on the door for security purposes while a deadbolt lock has a bolt that must be activated by a key or a thumb turn.
Most burglars use a knife blade to pick on locks, a deadbolt renders that impossible increasing security.
Deadbolts are suitable for wooden, steel and fibreglass doors.
Reinforcement of glass in the door
Glass panes in front doors are most commonly used to add a decorative element to your home.
They though pose a risk as someone can smash through them and flip open your deadbolt.
You can avoid that by using a security film which is available either in clear or translucent frosted styles.
The security film is applied carefully to all the glass in the door, and once set will bond with the glass making it impossible for a burglar to smash through.
