Parents and residents of Kwaregi area in Githirioni Location, Lari constituency, have kept off from enrolling their students at the Lari Technical and Vocational College which was launched by former President Uhuru Kenyatta at a cost of Ksh100 million.
According to the school management, only 67 students had enrolled at the institution since it began operating in 2019.
Besides the government spending Ksh100 million to equip the institution, the school administration argued that its state-of-art facilities had failed to attract good quora.
The institution was opened in September 2019, becoming the first TVET built by former President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration.
Its opening formed part of his legacy because the former Head of State promised during the 2013 campaign to build a vocational training institute in every constituency.
To address the situation, Lari MP Mburu Kahangara convened a crisis meeting with area residents and school administration to help increase admission at Lari Technical and Vocational College.
Besides holding a crisis meeting, the lawmaker revealed plans to set up hostels within the institution to attract more students.
"The school has not attracted enough students as we would want, and to be able to do that, we are planning, through Constituency Development Funds, to start building hostels in this school," the MP stated.
He, however, lauded the former regime indicating that the institution was key to transforming the region.
Uhuru's regime opened the institution to offer agriculture value addition courses.
It was also envisioned to offer other related courses in food processing and preservation, agribusiness, Information communication technology, plumbing and business courses.
Students were also expected to benefit from Artisan, Certificate and Diploma and short courses examined by Kenya National Examination Council.
