Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) posing as potential buyers on Sunday, April 9, arrested a woman from Kasarani selling a five-day-old baby.

Acting on a tip-off from members of the public, they declared interest in the baby boy who was being sold for Ksh400,000.

They then organised for the dealer to meet with the woman who was allegedly selling the child along the Eastern Bypass. When they met, he sought assurance from the mother that the deal was clean.

"I hope that we will not have any incidences of anyone coming out to claim this baby afterwards?" the officer posed.

"No. The incident you heard of was because the previous seller wanted more for the baby because the initial price she received was too little for a male child. She wanted at least Ksh350,000," the seller revealed.

The officers posed more questions about who the baby belonged to and whether the mother was aware of what was going on.

"She is a 13-year-old student and has no job. I told her that I would take her son to the children's home where he would be taken care of, but the child's grandmother knows the truth," the suspect revealed.

After the assurance, the undercover cops offered her Ksh300,000 in cash and convinced her to accompany them to a restaurant within Kasarani where she would be paid the Ksh100,000 balance.

During their discussion, the cops asked whether they would get a baby girl for their friend. The baby seller told them that she would confirm on their Whatsapp group.

Backed with sufficient evidence, they drove her to the Kasarani Police Station and placed her under police custody. Here, the suspect changed the narrative of how she found the child.

"I was travelling by bus to Nairobi and was seated next to a woman who had a child. She left the child with me to go for a short call but never returned," the woman claimed.

The area DCI director revealed that another child had been sold by the woman the previous week. The suspect is currently being questioned by officers.

The police have also launched a manhunt for her accomplices and previous clients.  Meanwhile, the rescued boy was moved into a safety centre where he will be taken care of.
