Renowned advocate, Danstan Omari, on Tuesday, April 11, defended a corporal accused of gunning down Maseno University student, William Mayange, during the mass action protests.

In a letter dubbed 'urgent', Omari claimed that the police was not on duty when the third-year student was allegedly shot dead by law enforcers.

"On March 20, our client who had been assigned with Kisumu anti-riot left for the city having booked out together with colleagues who had a similar assignment," he argued.

Through the law firm Musyoki Mogaka and Co. Advocates, Omari, an Advocate of the High Court, wrote to the Inspector General (IG) of Police Japhet Koome, demanding four documents to prove his client was innocent.

The firm wanted to be furnished with a certified extract from the Occurrence Book entries at the Maseno Police Station between March 19 and 23.

He also demanded documents to prove that the bullet that fell the Maseno University student was not from his client's assigned weapon.

"We kindly but very urgently seek a certified from the Arma Movement book for the duration between March 19 and 23 and the list of police officers assigned coverage on March 20 at Kisumu," the letter read in part.

Omari further requested to be furnished with information on the operation order with respect to the Kisumu anti-riot operation, specifically those from Maseno who were called to provide reinforcement.

The advocate vowed to take legal action against individuals who were perpetrating the notion that the corporal gunned down the Mayange.

Meanwhile, he argued that his client's life was at risk after her photos and contacts were shared widely on social media, subjecting her to possible attacks by members of the public.

Omari told the IG that Osoro could not effectively work and had to pull her children out of school over safety concerns.

On March 23, Koome explained that officers shot Mayange after a crowd attempted to storm into Maseno Police Station during the mass action protests.
