Motorists and commuters spent hours in traffic on Thursday, April 20, following an accident at Sabaki along Mombasa Road.
A driver of a speeding car lost control and slide off the road before rolling several times.
The pick-up landed in a ditch after the driver made several attempts to control it during the morning rush.
Traffic disruption affected all major entry points and exits along the busy highway that connects Nairobi and Mombasa.
Members of the public rushed to the scene and pulled out the driver who was injured but in a stable condition.
“The vehicle was heading towards Athi River before the incident happened,” a witness noted.
The driver was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where he received treatment.
Police officers immediately took charge of the situation, directing traffic which was already building up.
Curious onlookers milled around the scene to get a glimpse, worsening the traffic situation, as they captured the moments on their mobile phones.
Motorists were warned against speeding or flouting traffic rules, noting that stern action would be taken against those caught.
“We urge motorists to be cautious especially during rush hour to avoid such incidents,” police stated.
On Tuesday, April 18, President William Ruto chaired a Cabinet meeting that ordered the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to firmly deal with rogue drivers in order to reduce accidents.
According to NTSA, 3,358 people died on Kenyan roads between January 1 and September 13, 2022.
This marked an increase of two hundred and thirty-six people (236) from the same period in 2021, representing a 7.6 per cent increase.
