President William Ruto, on Friday, April 22, announced that the government would introduce a new funding model for universities from May 2023.
While speaking during a development tour in Meru County, the Head of State revealed that the government sought double funding for all universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
He explained that the new model would benefit students who bear the brunt of financial constraints.
However, more details on the new model would be availed in the coming week.
"We have determined that the technical colleges and universities are being underfunded. We will double the resources that are going to our universities, TVETS, to eliminate the challenges in our institutions.
"We will make the announcement next week so that those joining schools in May will have a new and comprehensive model that cannot compromise the quality of education," he stated.
On the other hand, the President added that the government was planning to hire more college teachers to address shortages.
The move would help improve the quality of education and empower the youth with enough technical skills for the job market.
"In the next two months, we will have new tutors and in our next budget from June, we will employ 2000 more TVET teachers," he revealed.
The President made the statement in recognition of recent reports on the financial state of many universities in debt and struggling to pay lecturers.
Public universities were the most affected, with a number proposing a fee increment.
The proposal to increase the fee from Ksh16,000 to Ksh48,000 was also backed by the Presidential Working Party On Education Reform led by Prof Raphael Munavu.
