Avoid Grilled Windows - Kenya Met Cautions as Rains Intensify in Nairobi, Other Areas

The Kenya Meteorological Department on Tuesday, April 25, cautioned Nairobians and Kenyans in select counties over heavy rainfall set to be witnessed in the next five days.

In a notice, the city residents were advised to take precautionary measures with the departments predicting incidents of flooding and lightning hence the need to avoid grilled windows.

Consequently, motorists were advised against driving on flooded roads to avoid damaging their vehicles.

Other regions targeted in the advisory were Embu, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Murang'a, Meru, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi, Narok, Kisii, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisumu, Nyamira, Kericho and Bomet counties.

Nakuru, Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River, Mandera, Lamu, Mombasa, Marsabit, Isiolo, Wajir and Garissa counties were also included on the list.

"The rainfall being experienced over several parts of the country is expected to continue up to Saturday, April 29, 2023. It is likely to intensify to more than 30mm in 24 hours in the Central Highlands including Nairobi County, the South and Central Rift Valley.

"Strong winds of more than 25knots (12 m/s) are expected over North-Western Kenya and other areas," read the advisory in part.

Additionally, Kenya Met warned Kenyans against taking shelter under trees.

In terms of strong winds, the department noted that roofs may also suffer damage and weaken the structure of buildings.

Various government agencies such as the National Disaster Operations Centre, and National Disaster Management Unit were also alerted of the expected changes in weather.

The advisory by the weatherman came hours before heavy rainfall and wind were experienced in some parts of Nairobi County such as Westlands.
