The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji recommended charges against a senior police officer accused of physically assaulting Capital FM Journalist Angela Muiruri.

An insider at the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) shared the details with Kenyans.co.ke on Wednesday, April 26, affirming that the officer would be charged with two counts of assault.

According to section 251 of the Penal Code; any person who commits an assault occasioning actual bodily harm is guilty of a misdemeanor and is liable to imprisonment for five years.

The senior officer was accused of using brute force on the famed radio presenter and her friends at a party in Kileleshwa, Nairobi, on December 19, 2020.

After the incident, Muiruri detailed to the media that ten police officers stormed the party and ordered everyone to sit and remain silent.

The journalist alleged that her efforts to intervene in the situation and question the officers were futile as the officer began assaulting her.

She recalled that the officer whipped her, leading to bruises on her limbs and back.

Muiruri claimed that the officers whipped her friends before proceeding to the parking lot where they were detained for hours.

She indicated that they were hurled into a police vehicle and taken to the Muthangari Police Station. At around 4:00 am, they were released after paying Ksh1,000 each.

The presenter affirmed that a formal complaint was filed at the KICC Police Station since officers based in other stations declined to file the report owing to the seniority of the officer in question.

Speaking to the media at a past interview, the officer, however, defended their actions indicating that they followed due procedure in enforcing the curfew laws at the time.

The case regarding Muiruri, an American citizen by birth, also caught the attention of the US Embassy which is following up on the matter.
