KTN News anchor, Zubeida Kananu, was elected Kenya Editors Guild President on Saturday, April 29.

Zubeida from Standard Media Group took over the leadership mantle from veteran journalist Churchill Otieno.

The KTN News presenter emerged as the winner after defeating Sammy Muraya from Journalists for Human Rights with 72 votes against 36.

Following that resounding victory, Churchill handed over the instruments of power to Zubeida, who will be at the helm of the Editors Guild for two years.

Ruth Nesoba, from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), was elected as Kananu's deputy.

Her Role

The Kenya Editors’ Guild is the professional association for editors in Kenya, including senior print, broadcast and online editors, and scholars of journalism and media studies.

Kananu's role includes overseeing and promoting media freedom and editorial independence. She will also ensure various media houses and journalists promote ethical and quality journalism.

Besides holding journalists accountable, Kananu and other officials of the Editors Guild will provide forums for sharing ideas and experiences that shape Kenya's media landscape.

Kananu's Career

Kananu joined Standard Media Group's KTN News in 2007 as an internal rose to anchor Swahili, host shows and provide editorial guidance.

In 2012 she was promoted to political editor for KTN LEO.

During the 2022 General Election, she moderated the Nairobi gubernatorial and deputy presidential debates.
