The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Tuesday, March 2, issued a warning to Kenyan motorists over a fake Twitter account scamming unsuspecting customers.

According to the Authority, the account which was created to imitate its original account, had gained popularity after the official NTSA Twitter account lost its verification.

NTSA explained that the imposter had been requesting the public to send their contact details and was engaging them privately, possibly requesting payment from motorists.

“As the Authority finalises the verification process to get back the blue checkmark, we advise our clients to be wary of a fake Twitter handle impersonating the official NTSA Twitter account.

“The account has been requesting the public to send through their phone numbers for support and engaging them privately through Direct Messages,” read NTSA statement.

Way Forward

The Authority, as a result, asked motorists to access any required services through the e-Citizen platform adding that it did not facilitate any cash transaction.

Further, NTSA directed its clients who had fallen prey to the con game to report to the nearest police station.

“All NTSA services are accessible via www.ntsa.go.ke and all payments are processed through the e-Citizen Platform. The Authority does not facilitate cash transactions.

“We urge clients who have been conned through the fake account to report to the nearest Police Station,” added NTSA.

Additionally, the authority called on Twitter users to report the fake account for further action.

“To this end, we also call upon the public to report this fake account to Twitter for further action. The official NTSA account has over 622k followers and joined Twitter in 2013,” the authority concluded.
