The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) on Friday, May 4, urged the court to deny cultic pastor, Paul Mackenzie, bail

The Prosecution accused the cult leader Paul Mackenzie of being a perennial lawbreaker who could not be trusted with bail relief.

While appearing before Shanzu Law Courts in Mombasa, the prosecution argued that Mackenzie was, in 2017, convicted of a similar offence.

In March 2017, Paul Nthenge Mackenzie, Winne Alexander Gandi and Betty Mwaka were jointly accused of going against Basic Education Act by offering Basic Education in an unregistered institution.

"The Respondent was previously convicted in a case in which he confessed but later, he began to commit the same offence to which he is currently being held," Prosecution stated.

Instead of defending themselves before the court, the three entered a plea bargain with the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). They were reportedly discharged by the trial court and ordered to be of good behaviour.

On October 17, Paul Mackenzie was once again charged with four offences, including radicalisation, offering basic education in an unregistered institution, Failing to take his child to compulsory primary and secondary education and failing to provide the right to education for a child.

Back then, Mackenzie had four children aged 13 years, 5 years and 4 years, but he declined to allow them to receive formal education.

However, Mackenzie denied the charges, prompting the court to open Care and Protection Files for his children.

The presiding judge released Mackenzie on Ksh100,000 cash bail or an alternative Bond of Sh500,000.

Chief Justice Martha Koome, launched investigations on all judiciary staff who handled Mackenzie's cases, seeking to establish whether they aided and abetted crime.

Mackenzie was arrested on April 15, 2023, released and re-arrested on Tuesday, May 2. He was accused of aiding over 110 Good News International Church members to kill themselves. He was also charged with radicalisation and terrorism.

His case is still underway at the Shanzu Law Court.
