Former Nyeri Town Member of Parliament (MP) Wambugu Ngunjiri on Sunday, May 7, highlighted different reasons for the chaos that rocked the Jubilee party noting that there were steps former president Uhuru Kenyatta could take.

According to Ngunjiri, Uhuru reached the apex of his political career and could not go beyond that point as he had been Head of State.

He stated that it was important for him to step aside and let other people lead the party to avoid criticism from members of the public.

“As far as I am concerned, Uhuru Kenyatta is retired. He might not be retired from politics but in my opinion, when it comes to running the party he needs to stand aside and let the party be run by different people.

“As long as he is fighting to run the party because that is what it looks like right now, he is going to have a situation where even people like myself who hold him in very high esteem will be forced to criticise him,” he stated.

Further, he stated that Uhuru may not be able to handle the necessary move needed to ensure the party continues to grow because he had already taken sides.

“The next step that Jubilee needs to take, I do not think Uhuru Kenyatta can take it. He already handed over to the new government peacefully.

“He had already taken the side of some of the members of the party who believe that the last elections were not tallied properly,” he added.

Why There Is Chaos in Jubilee

There is a fight between a past and a future at  Jubilee

According to Ngunjiri, one team at Jubilee believes that the way to go is to refute the last elections and delegitimise the current government while another team has accepted the reality of having a government and moving forward.

“There is a fraction of people within the party who still believe that the August 2022 elections were not correct and believe that serves could tell something different.

“There is a different group that has accepted the new reality even though they do not agree with it,” Ngunjiri stated.

Azimio does not include Jubilee MPS in meetings.

The former MP stated that the members of Jubilee were often excluded from meetings and press conferences held by the Azimio coalition.

He noted that it was the members of parliament who represented a party and if the jubilee MPs did not show up then it showed they were not in solidarity.

“Every time I see Jubilee having a conversation within Azimio, I see one or two members of parliament in that meeting. When I see the other team having meetings, I see 30-plus members of parliament.

“We need to ask ourselves who is actually representing Jubilee to the public,” he stated.

Azimio did not include Jubilee in bipartisan talks

Ngujiri also noted that members of the Jubilee party were left out of the list of representatives who would represent the Azimio coalition in the bipartisan talks.

He noted that it was an indication that the members of Jubilee were not considered valuable assets in the coalition.

“Azimio did not see within itself to nominate a single person from Jubilee. Out of seven people, Azimio should have at least two people from Jubilee,” Ngunjiri stated.

Jubilee Coup

Two factions are laying claim to the leadership of the former ruling party. One led by Jeremiah Kioni and the other by Kanini Kega.

The former President is under siege after Kega's faction appointed Sabina Chege as party leader, replacing Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kega's wing further kicked out David Murathe.

In a rejoinder, Kioni terminated the membership of Kega and Chege, further fueling the divisions within the former giant party.

However, Chege got reprieve in Parliament after Speaker Moses Wetangula gave Azimio 30 days before they can seek to replace her as the coalition's deputy whip.
