The Registrar of Societies Jane Joram on Wednesday, May 10, revealed that the agency had issued a 30-day licence cancellation notice to Pastor Ezekiel Odero's New Life Church.

Appearing before the Senate committee investigating the Shakahola mass graves, Joram indicated that the pastor had been directed to show cause why his licence should not be revoked.

The registrar further explained that the pastors' church would cease operations if officials failed to convince the government over the accusations levelled against it.

According to the government agency, the church had failed to file tax returns since its registration in 2012.

On the other hand, it was noted that the church was also facing investigations of running a cult.

“We took the liberty to send out cancellation notices to these churches because of the activities that have come to the fore.

"Since its registration, they have not complied with the requirements of the Societies Act, no returns have been filed and we have issued them with a notice to show cause," Deputy Registrar of Societies Goretti Nyariki stated.

Also included in licence cancellation plans was the Good News International ministries of Paul Mackenzie.

On the other hand, Attorney General Justin Muturi explained that his office failed to act on time given that it did not have an office in Kilifi County.

"The Registrar's office only has offices in 14 regions. If we were in Kilifi may we would have noticed what was happening,"  he stated.

Notably, the move by the government came a day after Pastor Ezekiel got a reprieve after the courts granted him permission to access the church.

In a ruling on May 8, Mombasa Presiding Judge Olga Sewe directed that the church be allowed to continue with its operation until the case is heard and determined.
