A Kenyan airline, Safarilink, on Wednesday, May 10, announced the suspension of flights to Kitale, Trans County.

In a notice, the local carrier informed customers that the suspension would take effect on Friday, June 9, 2023. Thursday, June 8, would be the last day of operations on flights destined for Kitale.

According to Safarilink, the suspension of Kitale flights was due to high cost of operations caused by increased fuel costs and the exchange rate.

"We have made this difficult decision due to the high cost of operations, including high fuel costs, unfavourable exchange rates, and inadequate airport infrastructure," the airline stated.

"After careful consideration, it has been determined that it is no longer financially viable to continue operating to Kitale," the company added.

The company appreciated their customers while expressing regret following the suspension. However, the airline promised to refund money for passengers who had booked flights past Friday, June 9.

"Customers holding bookings from 9th June onwards will receive full refunds, and our reservations team will be in touch with you to initiate the refund process," the airline stated.

"We sincerely appreciate the trust and loyalty you have shown us and regret the inconvenience this may cause," the notice further communicated.

The carrier, focusing on tourist destinations, flew the route five times a week using Dash 8-100/200 aircraft.

It started operation on that route in 2016. In 2020, the airline suspended operations due to allow the airport to undergo renovations.

In 2022, it scaled up operations targeting local travellers, tourists and other businessmen.

However, in the latest suspension, the airline did not set a specific date for service resumption along that route.
