UoN Drops 20 Places in World Ranking Over Graduates Failing to Secure Jobs

The University of Nairobi (UoN) dropped 20 places in the latest global university ranking released on Monday, May 15.

In the ranking done by the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR), the institution was placed at position 1425 globally.

CWUR used four indicators to rank the universities: Education, Employability, Faculty and Research rank.

UoN performed dismally in its employability rank, placing it in position 1610 globally, indicating that most of its graduates were finding it hard to transition to the job market.

However, the institution's research hub performed well globally and was ranked position 1365.

Nationally, the institution was the only Kenyan university that appeared in the top 2000 best academic institutions globally.

In total, CWUR surveyed 20,531 institutions and 47 universities from the country did not make a cut of the top 2000.

In East Africa, UoN came second after Ugandan Makerere University, ranked 950 globally.

Makerere also usurped UoN after being ranked 907 and 1518 in research and employability, respectively.

In Tanzania, the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences was ranked position 1920 globally with a research rank of 1843. 

No other university from East Africa made it to the top 2000 on the global list.

South Africa had 13 universities ranked in the top 2000, with the University of Cape Town leading at position 207.

Egypt had the highest representation in Africa, with 21 universities making it to the top 2000.

The United States dominated the list globally, with 336 universities making it to the top.

The top ten universities in the world included; Harvard University (US), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (US), Stanford University (US), University of Cambridge (United Kingdom), University of Oxford (United Kingdom), Princeton University (US), University of Chicago (US), Columbia University (US), University of Pennsylvania (US), and Yale University (US).
