Professor John Muteti who was appointed the acting Chief Executive Officer for Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) on Monday, May 15 is an academician with an enviable career.

NACADA Board Chairperson Dr. Stephen Mairori announced that Prof. Muteti would hold the position in the interim. 

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Dr. Mairori revealed that Muteti has a wealth of over 30 years experience from the academia, private and public sectors.

Muteti took over from Victor Okioma who retired from the position after serving for a term of five years.

In his acknowledgement statement, Muteti who is currently the Director, Research Policy and Planning at NACADA pledged to spearhead programmes in line with the Authority’s strategic plan.

Apart from his new role as acting NACADA CEO, Muteti holds other key positions in the education sector. 

He is an Associate Professor of Economics/Strategic Planning at Kisii University; University of Lusaka; The Management University of Africa (MUA) as from 2014 to date.

He is also an Advisory Board Member Build Africa (an International Non-Governmental Organization with headquarters in UK) from 2011 to present.

Prof. Muteti is also serving as a Principal Consultant for New-Gen Consulting Services from 2014 to present where he offers consultancy services to the United Nations and affiliated organizations. 

At the same time, he works as a Peer Reviewer – Commission for University Education (CUE) as well as being a trainer at Centre for Parliamentary Studies and Training (CPST). 

“As a Principal Consultant of the consultancy firm, I am the main contact person between the firm and the clients. I oversee and guide consultant teams during projects. I also act as a mentor to junior team members and other employees in the firm,” read part of Muteti’s statement. 

As from 1999 to 2013 he was a Senior Lecturer and Head of Department at the department of Development Studies at Catholic University of Eastern Africa.

As head of Department of Development studies, his main responsibility was chairing meetings and designing programs in Development Studies, Project Planning and Management as well as in Economics. 

Muteti was the Director for Betting Control and Licensing Board from 2010 to 2012 where he was involved in the control and licensing of gaming, betting and related activities.

He was the County Secretary for Makueni County Government from April 2013 to February 2014.

Between September 2014 and June 2015, he was a Senior Lecturer - Chandaria School of Business at the United States International University – Africa.

He holds a PhD in Commerce, Business Economics - Strategic Planning and Management from Nelson Mandela University.

Muteti has a Master of Arts (MA), Economics and Social Studies from The University of Manchester and a Bachelor's degree in Economics from Nairobi University. 

His publications include: Business Implementation Strategies in Kenyan Firms, Strategic Implications of the Drivers of E-business Implementation in Developing Countries and the Influence of Demographic Variables on E-business Implementation in Kenya.
